The AMSA Foundation, in collaboration with the Program on Global Health and
Technology Access at Duke University's Terry Sanford Institute of Public
Policy, is currently planning a 4-day, summer institute to educate students
and residents about the professional, ethical and practical consequences of
the current medicine-pharmaceutical industry relationship. Through the
curriculum offered and speakers at the institute, we will learn to define an
appropriate relationship between our profession and the pharmaceutical
industry to ensure medicine is practiced with the highest scientific and
ethical standards. In addition, participants will be empowered with the
skills to conduct activities at their own institutions to increase peer
awareness and become catalysts for change to improve pharmaceutical policy.

The objectives of the program will be:

· Understand the research and development process for new
pharmaceuticals and evaluate the industry's claims and concerns over
innovation and generic drug competition;

· Critically appraise the promotional approaches for drugs, as well
as the various sources comprising the unbiased evidence base;

· Recognize potential influences over prescriber choice and behavior,
the sources of conflict of interest and the professional norms to safeguard
against such conflicts; and

· Consider various strategies for improving pharmaceutical policy as
well as physician prescribing practices.

The program is open to any allopathic or osteopathic medical student or
resident enrolled in a U.S. medical school or residency program interested
in learning advocacy skills to affect the medicine-pharmaceutical industry
relationship
