*Civitas** E-newsletter*

*Week of November 1, 2010*

Welcome to Civitas! Through this listserv, we seek to provide students with
short-term volunteer opportunities and interesting student initiated
projects in the neighborhoods where you live. If you have ideas for a
project you’d like support with, or if you have volunteer opportunities
you’d like promoted send your thoughts to the listserv administrators.

(“Civitas”, definition courtesy of dictionary.com: citizenship, esp. as
imparting shared responsibility, a common purpose, and sense of community.)

*Civitas Kick Off– Already 122 members strong!!*

Thanks to everyone who has kicked off this new group with great momentum. At
122 members we have already heard some great stories of how people have been
staying involved in the community. Make sure to tell your friends, find us
on Facebook, and contribute more opportunities when you hear about them.

*Help get out the vote!*

Meet at 1721 University Ave SE at the Students' Coop any time between 10 -
8pm Tuesday to do *non-partisan* door knocking or flyering with a partner.
Just 2 people within an hour could knock on hundreds of doors within a dorm
and just those hundreds alone could be the deciding factor in an election.
Come and we will feed you and teach you grassroots organizing skills!

* *

*Assist a SE Senior near you!*

We need your help to rake and shovel your senior neighbors walkways! Please
contact Carolyn Kennedy for more information [log in to unmask]

*The Cold is Coming—how can we stay active?*

Winter is quickly approaching, a time when most people retreat to the warmth
of their homes. How can we create a sense of community during the cold? Send
us your ideas for winter block events and neighborhood festivities or
projects to make them a reality!

*Como Safety Walks—Thursdays at 6:00 p.m.*

Join the Safety Committee and residents for safety walks this fall every
Thursday starting at 6:00 p.m. out front of Joes Market (1828 Como Avenue).

*Help Organize an Urban Farm in SE Como*

We’ve got a location; now join a team to make the urban farm a reality for
neighbors in the SE Como neighborhood. This team will navigate city policy,
look for funding opportunities, deal with the construction of raised beds,
garner resources, and plan a management strategy for producing maximum yield
this next growing season. Interested in helping in any capacity? Email
[log in to unmask] to get more information.

*University District Forums—November 8th** **at 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.*

Discuss the Urban Design Framework for the University District at the Bell
Museum Auditorium. The University District Alliance* *is made up of
dedicated volunteers and staff from the University of Minnesota Minneapolis
campus area neighborhoods, business associations, University student
government, the City of Minneapolis, Augsburg College and the University of
Minnesota. It also includes a growing number of friends and partners who are
committed to achieving a vibrant, safe, healthy, and sustainable community
area. (http://bit.ly/bMaelD)

neighborhoods to enhance offender accountability for urban livability crimes
by empowering local citizens to participate directly in the justice process.
Attend one of the upcoming community meetings and share your stories as a
