Dear David and Todd:

In my opinion the only advantage of the 4-color ribbon is when you have
black text on your images. In that case, the text will be printed much
sharper (better than laser). That is if you can set the printer to print
black text on black pass only. We have a Codonics np600 with a resolution
of 162 dpi which only has the option of the three color ribbon. It is a
network printer and is very good, but color control is limitted. The cost
for the ribbon and paper (which comes together as a set) is $125 for 50
8.5x11 prints and $145 for 100 8.5x 8 prints. The printer itself costed us
$10,000 about two years ago. We also have recently purchased a Primera Pro
dye sublimation printer from Fargo Electronics, for around $1500 with
maximum resolution of 600x300. It has four printing choices: a three color
thermal wax and a four color thermal wax for fast working copies, a three
color and a four color dye sub. for photographic quality prints. The
quality is excellent and it prints at a speed similar to our Codonics
(about 1 page/4-5 min. in the highest resolution mode). The color control
is almost infinit. It works with both Macs and PCs. Supplies cost about
the same as the Codonics. By the way, I did not meen to sound like a sales
person for Fargo Electronics!!

>>Hello ....
>> We have a Phaser 440 ..... it is pretty nice, but seems to take a
>>little bit more time than expected to print. It has 32 MB, a lower
>>paper tray and ethernet card. One big surprise to me was the
>>suppplies, I believe it was the old "bait and switch" with the
>>prices. I was told $245 for 100 sheets of paper and dye roll, but
>>when I went to pick up supplies, it turned into $245 for the dye roll
>>and $175 for 200 sheets of paper. So that is about $3.33 per print,
>>plus the $9,000 or so for the printer. I believe the quality is very
>>good though, I'm running it with Win95 and a updated driver.
