This is the Duluth Birding Report for May 19th, 2011 sponsored by the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A male SUMMER TANAGER was found by Heidi Yokel on the 13th near Cotton
in central St. Louis County. Ann and Dave Miller had a SUMMER TANAGER at
their feeders in Duluth Township between the 12th and the 16th.

Tanya Beyer found a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE and a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER on the
14th at the Park Point recreation area. Jan and Larry Kraemer saw five
RED-THROATED LOONS at the recreation area on the 18th. Matti Hakkila saw
19 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and eight LONG-TAILED DUCKS on the 16th on Lake
Superior just west of the Lester River. Greg Garmer saw two WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS on the 18th and 19th at the Beacon Point condominiums at 21st
Avenue East. An immature GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on the 19th at
Interstate Island in the Duluth harbor.

Don Kienholz found a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD on the 19th at the Duluth Rose
Garden near Leif Erikson Park. Erik Bruhnke saw one on the 16th at the
Sky Harbor Airport on Park Point. Andy Nyhus found a NORTHERN
MOCKINGBIRD on the 14th just east of Grand Marais along MN Highway 61.

Lori Hutchens saw an EASTERN TOWHEE on the 15th in her yard at 213 West
Orange Street in Duluth. Jan and Larry Kraemer saw a RED-BELLIED
WOODPECKER on the 18th on the Western Waterfront Trail just east of 72nd
Avenue West. Gordy Martinson had a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER on the 13th at
his feeders near Maxwell Road and Oak Street north of Duluth.

Shawn Conrad saw a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE on the 17th in Grand Rapids at
2nd Avenue SE and 6th Street SE. Two LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen on the
16th at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors.

New arrivals in the area during the past week include SEMIPALMATED
PLOVER, DUNLIN, LEAST SANDPIPER, UPLAND SANDPIPER, GREAT CRESTED
FLYCATCHER, WARBLING VIREO, SEDGE WREN, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH,
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, and BAY-BREASTED WARBLER
