This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, July 14,
2011 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You

After a few days of hot humid weather, now we are temporarily back to
cool conditions reminiscent of fall. Flowers are very colorful in the
northwest, and birds everywhere are feeding young.

Mel and Elaine Bennefeld were birding in Clay County this week. On July
11, they saw a BOBOLINK near the Science Center and the Ponderosa Golf
Course. A GOLDEN EAGLE was spotted on July 13, and also a pair of
SANDHILL CRANES north of the golf course between MN 10 and the railroad
tracks. Nancy Jackson visited Felton Prairie on July 11 where she found
a SPOTTED SANDPIPER with half-grown young, 3 UPLAND SANDPIPERS,
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES, GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS,
and ORCHARD ORIOLES. On the weekend, Doug Johnson found UPLAND SANDPIPER
on Bluestem Prairie .A KRIDER'S RED-TAILED HAWK, UPLAND SANDPIPERS,
WESTERN KINGBIRD,and GRASSHOPPER SPARROW were seen at a new Nature
Conservancy area about 3 miles north of Buffalo River SP. GREATER
PRAIRIE-CHICKENS were seen on 190th St north of US 10.

Here in the yard in Pennington County near Thief River Falls, on July 9,
there were at least two begging juvenile PURPLE FINCHES being fed by an
adult. On the 11th, an adult BALD EAGLE caught something on the Red Lake
River by our yard. July 14 saw a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER feeding young
at our feeder.

Larry Wilebski sent a photo of a young MERLIN seen near Lancaster in
Kittson County this week.

Thanks to Doug Johnson, Larry Wilebski, Mel and Elaine Bennefeld, and
Nancy Jackson for their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at [log in to unmask] OR call the Detroit Lakes
