This is the Duluth Birding Report for August 22nd, 2013 sponsored by the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

PARASITIC JAEGERS have been seen recently along Park Point and Wisconsin
Point. Karl Bardon saw five on the 13th between Gull Bluff and the
Superior Entry on Wisconsin Point, one of which briefly crossed into
Minnesota waters. Other sightings at Park Point occurred on the 14th and
17th. Peder Svingen saw three RED-NECKED PHALAROPES on the 13th at the
Sky Harbor Airport and Tim Lamey saw two on the 14th on Lake Superior
southeast of the mouth of the Lester River. Karl Bardon saw a flock of
56 phalaropes on the 20th at the mouth of the Lester River, presumably
Red-necked Phalaropes.

Many observers throughout northeastern Minnesota have reported
impressive flights of COMMON NIGHTHAWKS in recent days. Karl Bardon
reported that more than 30,800 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were counted on the
21st between sunrise and sunset between count sites at Hawk Ridge and
Lester Park. Kim Eckert counted more than 1,300 on the 21st during one
hour in the late afternoon near 25th Avenue East and Peder Svingen
counted more than 3,800 in one hour on the evening near the same
location. Jesse Ellis counted more than 3,700 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS in less
than an hour of counting on the 19th near Tofte in Cook County.
Interestingly, the birds were flying north.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, August
29th.

The telephone number of the Duluth Rare Bird Alert is 218-834-2858.
Information about bird sightings may be left following the recorded
message.
