This is the Duluth Birding Report for May 2nd, 2014 sponsored by the
Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Peder Svingen counted a record high of 3,995 RED-NECKED GREBES on the
1st between Lakewood Road and French River. He also counted 2,094 HORNED
GREBES, and saw one LONG-TAILED DUCK and two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS. Jan
and Larry Kraemer saw a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER on April 17th at Canal Park
in Duluth and 44 LONG-TAILED DUCKS at Stony Point on the 19th.
Terry Wiens saw a late GLAUCOUS GULL on the 2nd at the Park Point
Recreation Area ball fields. He also saw eight CANVASBACK on the 29th on
the bayside of Park Point.
Other recent spring arrivals in the two past weeks include GREEN-WINGED
TEAL, COMMON LOON, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SANDHILL CRANE,
TREE SWALLOW, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, HERMIT THRUSH,
CHIPPING SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, and RUSTY
