Spring seems to be peeking around the corner now in the northwest. We
have had a week of seasonable weather; now as I compile this it is
snowing , but there is a promise of temperatures of around 50 degrees in
a couple of days. More and more returning HORNED LARKS are being seen,
and a few raptors are making an appearance as the snow cover diminishes.
Owls are on the nests now.
The Fargo-Moorhead Audubon group made a trip to far northern Minnesota
last weekend and they found lots of interesting birds. In Lake of the
Woods County, they found two NORTHERN HAWK OWLS on the Roosevelt Forest
Road. At Norris Camp there were RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, GRAY JAYS, PINE
GROSBEAKS and COMMON REDPOLLS.
In Roseau County, they saw RUFFED GROUSE, BALD EAGLE, PILEATED
WOODPECKER, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, GREAT GRAY OWL, NORTHERN HAWK OWL,
SNOWY OWL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, GRAY JAY, SNOW BUNTINGS, COMMON REDPOLLS,
and PINE GROSBEAK along or near MN 310. Several SPRUCE GROUSE were seen
on the Sprague Creek Road. GREAT HORNED OWL was seen along CR 28, and
another SNOWY OWL on MN11. Near the Thompson Forest Road they found two
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS and a NORTHERN GOSHAWK. Other species seen in
Roseau County included SHARP-TAILED GROUSE west of Roseau. Beth Siverhus

Another SNOWY OWL was found by the group near Donaldson in Kittson
County along MN 11.
Two TRUMPETER SWANS were reported by Hal Sanders on Lake Bemidji,
Beltrami County, on February 24. He also had a pair of PILEATED
WOODPECKERS in this yard in Bemidji .
A pair of BALD EAGLES are on the nest at Parker Pool at Agassiz NWR,
Marshall County, as reported by Leon Thoreson on February 27.
In Polk County, Leon reported 40 CANADA GEESE near Climax, and HORNED
LARKS along CR 222 on February 27.
Spring is starting to come to Douglas County this weekend. Benjamin
Eckhoff reported NORTHERN CARDINALS, an occasional NORTHERN SHRIKE, and
an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW at the feeders at Lake Carlos State Park this
week. Waterfowl in the area included TRUMPETER SWANS, and COMMON
MERGANSERS. BARRED OWL was reported and GREAT HORNED OWLS are on the
nest. In the Alexandria area were COMMON GOLDENEYE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS,
RED-TAILED HAWKS, HORNED LARKS, and EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES.
Thanks to Benjamin Eckhoff, Beth Siverhus, Hal Sanders, Leon Thoreson,
