Hello Sarah,
A flexible long term solution is a dedicated file server for moving and
storing projects. When users log into any of our computers (including the
Leica) their file share is automatically mounted through Samba so it
appears as a normal harddrive on the workstation. After collecting images
and saving locally (for the sake of speed) they are easily transferred to
the file server via drag and drop. After the data is copied or moved to
the server the user can access this data via FTP from anywhere in the
world; naturally moving large datasets is only practical on a fast network
connection, however. It's a nice solution because it is backed up daily,
and users' LCS profiles are stored remotely on the server as well so we can
reformat and upgrade the Leica software easily or even swap to a backup
ghosted harddrive in a matter of minutes and users' preferences and data
are maintained. The downside is that you'll need someone knowledgeable in
they ways of system administration to rig a setup like this.
A makeshift solution if your workstation is networked is to make a
users' local directory on the Leica machine shareable. In this scheme,
users who are on the local (university) network should be able to access
their data using a remote PC or MacOSX or Linux w/ Samba. This requires a
network configured for windows networking and someone with admin
priveledges on the workstation to due the configuration.
We have a couple people running around with USB 2.0 and Firewire
portable harddrives also. They love them and they appear to work very
well, however people have to supply their own drives.
