Obviously this depends on 1. how much you want to spend
and 2. what you want to do with it.


One interesting approach which might at least be worth getting a
demo of from your local rep is the Zeiss Apotome.  This uses
'structured illumination' to generate optical sections and while
it may not be totally equivalent to confocal is could be useful -
I'm still waiting for my demo of it!
