Dear Andrea - Most of the software companies will let you try a demo license
for some period of time - 30 days or so. I would recommend you install a
demo license of a couple and try them out on the same dataset. You should
tell them what your applications are, so they can provide you with the
modules and maybe sample datasets you need to get going. Do you want
software for acquisition or just offline analysis? This is something you
need to consider.

Also, I hate to disagree agree with Rolly re commercial packages vs. ImageJ
since nobody loves ImageJ as much as I do, but I do think there are some
applications better served by other software packages. For example, I
wouldn't do any 4D (xyzt+) analysis on anything but Imaris. They also have a
beautiful and easy to use Filament Tracer module for neuronal growth and
branching quantitation. I don't want to start a fight here, just MHO. I know
these things can be done in ImageJ and are done in ImageJ, but
realistically, it's easier/faster in some other packages. And time = money.

You may also keep in mind that some of these software packages require
fairly heavy-duty computers (many GB of RAM, fast processors (2 or 4), top
of the line video boards, etc.)j, which can also be a large expense.

Best of luck to you,
 Holly

Andrea, you may want to contact various manufactures to inquire about
drivers for your particular cameras. Some driver/camera/software
pairings work better than others. For example I believe Hamamatsu now
owns Compix so Compix has good support for their cameras and not others.
P.S. For my two cents, I like: Compix, Image Pro, SPOT (simplistic),
Velocity, and also Amira and Imaris.

I use ImageJ already. It's ok. I am looking to step it up a notch. We
are a large research lab and need more sophisticated approach than
homegrown methods.

As far as ImageJ does anyone have a user guide for histologists that
to help new users become familiar?

Thanks,
Andrea
