continued success.

Staff Scientist I - Requisition # 10796

The confocal microscopy group within the Genzyme Pathology collaborates
with investigators and other members of the confocal group to design and
implement animal model- and cell culture-based studies utilizing advanced
microscopy techniques as the primary readout. Imaging modalities to be
utilized include human interactive and automated confocal microscopy,
fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, time lapse recording, macroscopy,
widefield fluorescence microscopy and structured illumination. In this position,
development of fluorescence-based assays, custom image analysis algorithms,
and downstream statistical tools will be used to extract biological information
from image datasets. Biological interpretation, report writing, communication of
results to investigators, and quality control will be critical aspects of the
position. The position will involve mostly team-based work with some
opportunity for independent research. You will interact with diverse groups in
the Genzyme Science and Manufacturing organizations. Imaging/image analysis
approaches currently used within the group include confocal microscopy,
fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, high content analysis, widefield
microscopy with or without structured illumination, brightfield and fluorescence
macroscopy, and development of custom image analysis algorithms using a
variety of software packages.

Basic Qualifications: PhD in cell biology or the life sciences and a maximum of
3 years academic or industrial laboratory experience. Requires 2+ years cell
culture and immunofluorescence/ immunohistochemistry staining experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Thorough understanding of the principles of confocal
and widefield fluorescence microscopy, cell biological processes and basic
tissue architecture. Rigorous experimental design experience and able to
develop and troubleshoot novel fluorescence-based assays. One or more
years experience using Metamorph, Imaris, and/or Matlab image analysis
software and 1 or more years experience with Visual Basic programming. One
or more years experience using standard biochemical and molecular biological
techniques such as in situ hybridization, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis,
standard subcloning and restriction analysis, preparation of protein extracts
from cells and tissues, immunoprecipitation, SDS-PAGE and Western blot
analysis will also be helpful. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
