Dear Confocal List,

In the Department of Biomedical Engineering - Junior Specialist Position
Begin screening on May 1, 2009; will remain open until filled

An opening is available for an individual with experience in confocal
microscopy and or fluorescence spectroscopy for the full time position of
junior specialist within the Department of Biomedical Engineering in The
Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California,
Irvine. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining
equipment, training and assisting researchers in analyzing biological
samples as well as for assisting in the development of new optical methods
of analysis for biological specimens. The junior specialist will work
closely with the director of the Optical Biology Core Facility in the
Developmental Biology Center and with the Laboratory for Fluorescence
Dynamics. The position requires strong interpersonal skills, experience in
giving presentations and training and a solid background in optical
physics. Experience in methods of biological analysis is highly desirable.
The core facility is equipped with four laser scanning confocal
microscopes including one Zeiss LSM510, an NLO LSM510 META, LSM710,
Olympus FV1000 and a microscope for live animal imaging. This is an
exciting opportunity to participate in a facility that is on the cutting
edge of technology development in the area of optical biology.

Initial appointment is for 12 months, renewable subject to performance and
availability of adequate funding. Position requires a B.S., M.S. or
equivalent. Good communication and writing skills are required. The
applicant should have broad knowledge (college level) of physics,
biochemistry and chemistry and should be familiar with basic computer use.
