The manufacturer will charge up to about 10% of the purchase price per
year for a service contract. We have found that some are good enough to
offer a reduced amount of service calls for a lower price. These seem to
be a good deal, but a lot of institutions are operating microscopes on a
self-insured basis. This means if it breaks, you have to have enough
money banked to fix it.
