The BioImaging & Optics Platform (BIOP) at the School of Life Sciences of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) is offering a position to complement the existing team as a

Collaborator for microscopy

The BIOP enables and facilitates the access to state-of-the-art light microscopes for scientists within and outside the School. The goal of the BIOP is to support the research community and help answer challenging biological questions through the use of modern light microscopy approaches.

The platform is responsible for training users, giving advice on techniques based on light microscopy as well as the esacquisition and the maintenance of instruments. The platform comprises a wide range of microscopes, including widefield fluorescent microscopes, point scanning confocal microscopes and multi-beam scanning microscopes. A variety of super-resolution instruments, including to perform Stimulated Emissions depletion (STED), Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM) as well as point localization-based approaches (STORM, PALM) are also available. Further information regarding the platform including the detailed list of equipment can be found at http://biop.epfl.ch/ .

The person filling this position will train scientists to use the equipment of the core facility, give advice to scientists regarding microscopy/microscopy-based assays, assist the team in teaching courses on light microscopy, and perform some administrative duties for billing, ordering supplies and organizing the day-to-day running of the platform.

The suitable candidate is expected to have a university degree in a related area. Being able to understand and explain the underlying principles of a light microscope is a must. A strong practical background in light microscopy connected to biological questions as well as basic knowledge in image processing is an asset.

The applicant should be rigorous, reliable, well organized and have the flexibility needed for working in a service-oriented context. Good communication skills in English and the ability to operate as a team player in a multi-disciplinary environment are required.
