We just picked the Zeiss for a multiuser facilty in Physiology at the
Medical College of Virginia. Several issues were: (1) UV transmission of
optics - Leitz was reluctant to share info and the numbers they eventually
provided were much lower than those for comprable Zeiss objectives.
(2) Zeiss' ability to scan at arbitrary angles - useful for long cells such as
myocytes. (3) Leitz does not have software available immediately for
applications such as release of caged compounds and FRAP while Zeiss does. (4)
We also were concerned about pin hole size/selection/adjustment regarding
colocalization and Z-axis depth of field for different wavelengths. We judged
the Zeiss system better on this, but the technical issues are complex at
others may disagree.
