Perhaps one of the best is the new Codonics printer.  It is virtually a
computer; will take inthe image fro a variety of sources, and produces a
very high quality image for output.   It's expensive (~8K) but probably
worth it).
 
I bought a Fargo Primera printer for about $900 last year; it's now about
$450.  It does a very good job, but runs slowly because it has no memory
of its own.  That's why it is cheap, of course.  Price per print is about
the same as the Codonics.  Its image may not be quite as sharp in some
people's hands; but I've found it to be high quality.  It probably isn't
the instrument of choice for high volume use, though.
