FITC labeling of histons

A collegue tried to label histons with FITC. She tried different protocols
but all resulted in aggregation of the histons (brightly labeled). She
would like to obtain moderatly labeled histons without clumps. How to solve
this problem?
Does anyone have experience with other dyes? any suggestions?
