In addition to the helpful suggestions offered by Chris Pudney, you may wish
to check out my software pages for links to some packages that can convert
between formats:

If you have access to a Unix workstation, then Chris' suggestions are good
ones.  Here are my picks for image conversion (including PC and Mac platforms):
 
Unix: ImageMagick
PC (Windows): PaintShop Pro
PC (DOS): Display
Mac: Graphics Converter
 
What's nice about all of these is that they can handle batch conversion.
