Having just received and reviewed the literature on the "Olympus
FLUOVIEW Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope", their literature states
that they do collect 12-bit depth data.

        I do not own such a system.  I have not demo'd such a system.  Nor
have I dug out the deatils on the 12-bit depth.  Nor do I work for
Olympus.  I'm just trying to shuffle the the info. to the group as
FYI.
