2 POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH OFFICER POSITIONS (University of Melbourne,
Australia)

(A: Confocal Microscopy and Pharmacology; B: Electrophysiology)

Applications are invited for two Research Officer position in the Autonomic
Nervous System Group of the Departments of Physiology and of Anatomy and
Cell Biology at the University of Melbourne. Research focuses on
physiological and structural studies of the intrinsic nervous system of the
gut (the enteric nervous system) and on the autonomic nerves that regulate it.

A: One RO will use confocal microscope methods to combine
immunohistochemical and pharmacological methods for study of the receptor
subtypes found on enteric neurons, intestinal muscle and interstitial
cells. The work involves confocal microscope analysis of receptor binding,
the determination of receptor pharmacology profiles for enteric
neurotransmitters and the investigation of novel compounds acting at these
receptors. Experience in receptor pharmacology and computer analysis is
expected. Experience in confocal microscopy is desirable.

B: The other RO will lead a study of the extrinsic sensory neurons that
supply the intestinal wall with an emphasis on neurons with cell bodies in
the dorsal root ganglia. This will involve electrophysiological recording
from afferents in the mesenteric nerves or from dorsal root ganglion cells.
This work will be integrated with ongoing studies of the intrinsic sensory
neurons. Experience in electrophysiological methods is essential and
experience in recording from small diameter axons in nerve trunks is
desirable.

A higher degree in an appropriate discipline is essential for each position.

Salary: in the range: $37830 to 40,608 (Research Officer, NH&MRC scale)
