Hi Eric,
People have tried this here at the Beckman Institute, although not
routinely due to the time and computer time required. Dr. Tim Karr (now in
the Dept. of Organismal Biology at the U. of Chicago) used the confocal to
collect 3D data sets of sperm tail structures in Drosophila embryos and
(with the help of the people at NCSA) displayed them in the CAVE VR
environment developed here. The idea was to be able to "step inside" the
structure and take measurements of this large, coiled structure within the
early embryo. If you have questions about the methodology, try contacting
either Tim directly or Dr. Bridget Carragher ([log in to unmask]), the director
of the facility.
Best,
Steve
