Apple did by NeXT (for $400M) and the OpenStep OS will become the kernel of
the future Mac operating system (to appear, according to Apple
spokespersons in 1998). It is a symmetric multiprocessing OS with memory
management, etc., very similar to BSD 4.3 Unix. so it should be higher in
performance and reliability. OpenStep has already been ported to the
PowerPC (601) platform, so hopefully integration with the MacOS should work.
