On the topic of NIHImage software status: as far as I know, NIHImage
is_not_a_shareware, but freeware, may be even public domain. The software
is  freely distributable, as well as its source code, thanks to its author,
Wayne Rasband <[log in to unmask]>. However, it's mandatory to refere to
NIHImage in one's publication, if used.
