Only a few months ago, we needed to by a new printer for both color and
black-and-white prints in high-quality format for publication purposes.
Technically, the best option is to buy a dye-printer (Kodak, Codonics,
Tektronics,...). However, this printer type is very expensive, and the
cost-per-print (special paper, dyes) is also very high.
Instead we have bought:
1) A 1200x1200 dpi Lexmark Optra R plus laserprinter for high-quality
black-and-white printouts. This printer also provides a 127-gray scale
print modes for prints with gray shades.
and
2) A 600x600 dpi Lexmark Optra C color laserprinter for high-quality color
prints.
Both of these printers use regular paper, significantly lowering the
cost-per-print.
Both printer were connected to a Windows NT Server 4.0 computer, so both
Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows NT and Macintosh users can access them for
their printouts.
