I am sure I came across some special low temperature lenses and
cooling systems for looking at ice cream. If I can remeber wher I saw
it, I'll let you know.

When I was working on a prototype transmission confocal microscope, I did some
experiments with imaging a frozen block of tissue on a cryostat. With long
working distance objectives in a dry atmosphere it worked very well. I was
able to use vital stains on large tissue pieces, then freeze them and image
the distribution of fluorescence. However, I was only going down to dry ice
temperatures.
