Let me add a funny story to this. Some years ago
I (and colleagues) published a paper which included
an image of some gels. Unfortunately one of the
gels cracked when being taken out of its tube, so
there was a black line across it in the photo.
However, when the paper appeared in the journal
the line had completely disappeared! Presumably the
image editor thought it was a hair and touched it
out.

On a more serious note, most systems these days
collect 12 or 16 bit image data. There is no way
these grey scales can be reproduced so we have to
make some choice (or let software make its choice)
of how these are represented in 8 bits. Human
intervention would seem the more sensible approach.
