Hi Helen,
-- A Commercial Endorsement Follows--
The software tools in Image-Pro Plus may well perform the tasks you are
describing. Counting and morphometry tools are available to determine
percent area coverage and to classify objects based upon a number of
attributes such as their area. Semi- or full automation is possible
through customizable macro scripting.
Our 3D Constructor module now allows for neuron tracing and measurement.
It will interpret file formats from a number of sources, including most
confocal formats.
If you have additional questions I will be happy to discuss off-line.
Best Regards,
Will Casavan

Subject: selecting image analysis software for multiple tasks
Search the CONFOCAL archive at

We find ourselves wanting to purchase some image analysis software for a
variety of different tasks. Our 2 most pressing needs are for:
1) counting triple stained cells as a % of DAPI+ nuclei in serial
sections (70-100 sections/animal). Semi automated and ability to parcel
data into regions would be great.
2) analyzing neurite outgrowth from cocultured explants (area, length,
direction, branching etc.). Tracing neurite behavior in 3D would be a
huge bonus
Based on our research, for the counting, Metamorph looks impressive. For
the neurite outgrowth, the filament tracer in Imaris looks impressive.
Does anyone know of software that is ideal for both?
We have also been considering Image Pro+ and IPLab. Should we be
considering any other software?
Cost is a consideration, although we are willing to pay for the right
software. So many of the other feature are enticing (like
deconvolution, cell tracking, colocalization, auto alignment etc.) but
not absolutely necessary for us. We would prefer the software to allow
analysis independent of acquisition (i.e. use confocal files or other
digital image files)
thanks for any help you can provide
Helen
